All Things Being Equal

Would it be better to have a bad liar as governor or a good liar as governor?

As far as I know, Rick Scott is not a liar, so all things are likely not equal in Florida. But the question is worth considering.

I think it boils down to credibility. If the candidate just can not tell lies without giving away that she's lying (i.e. facial expressions), then I would vote for her. If she can not get away with lying due to incompetence (which would be the case here), then I would not vote for her.

The difference is that incompetence is rarely confined only to one area. If she habitually shoots herself in the foot, then she shouldn't be allowed near any dangerous objects, not just firearms.

Truth

We aren't that sort of prejudiced bigot. We're a different sort of prejudiced bigot.

More Inspiration From Broadway

Linda Eder sings 'I Don Quixote, Man of La Mancha'. This and 'Impossible Dream' qualify on the short list for rousingest anthems. There's currently quite the debate as to who sang better, Richard Kiley or Brian Stokes Mitchell. Linda Eder is here by way of a compromise. All three versions are terrific. And doesn't she have a wonderful voice?

Telling Secrets

Part of my profession is keeping other people's secrets. When a client tells me something, I do not pass it along. On the other hand, in my personal life, I have very few secrets. I'm a horrible liar. My mother, my wife and my siblings can always tell when I try to fib. But I don't discuss the specifics of my work with my wife, so in the sense of telling the truth, the whole truth and nothing but the truth, she gets the partial truth.

And to be blunt, most of the information I learn professionally is rather dull. So the greatest security for my clients' confidences is not encrypted files or locked cabinets, but the boredom they induce.

Recently, I did try to keep something secret from my wife. We were unable to do much for our tenth anniversary last year. This year I booked us onto a cruise for the week of our anniversary. Sally knew I was doing this, so that was not a secret. What she didn't know was that after booking it and giving her the details, I then tried to upgrade our cabin from inside to outside with a view. Unfortunately my cunning plan was spoiled by the very helpful travel agent I discussed them with. The good news is that we are in a much better berth than I had hoped.

All the while I was plotting and scheming, Sally knew something was up. She just didn't know what. She did know that it was going to be good, whatever it was. Wives are like that.

As part of my job, I keep secrets. As part of married life I don't. And what helps me in that balancing act is that my job will never require me to do anything immoral. And I am mindful that God knows all and that in the end everything I do I must answer for. I think too many people forget that point.

They Call The Wind Sharia

Following up on my reading of Tom Kratman's book Caliphate as well as a worthwhile non-fiction account of people who have ceased being Muslim, I came across an excellent article by Bruce Bawer detailing how certain elements in the West (BBC anyone?) are cravenly caving in the face of Muslim protests in accurately portraying Islamic doctrine and practise.

I believe in being fair. I believe in it very strongly. I also believe in freedom of speech and freedom of the press. I believe in these things because first and foremost I believe in the truth. In our modern world, lying on a sustained basis (the 'Big Lie' technique) has become problematical. If I were a member of the mainstream media, I would be worried by these three writings. The Bawer article in particular will be read. It will be read by people that matter. And the more the MSM is shown as having soft-peddled or flat out lied on this subject, the more it is discredited on everything else.

Also, being a Western kind of guy and a lawyer to boot, one of my working postulates for life is that if you mention something to someone and they start hollering, odds are they really lack the courage of their convictions and know, deep down, that the Truth isn't on their side. That postulate has worked pretty well for me for over twenty years. Being an optimist (Christians tend to be), I can not help but think that in the long run Islam is doomed. And that maybe they know it.

As for anyone who is wishing to declare fatwa against me, I am a seven foot tall Chinese woman with flaming red hair (natural). I live in Nome, Alaska. Really.
