The thing that is truly astounding about this scene is that for once, Hollywood did not embellish reality. Those who were there on Omaha Beach have said that this scene is as close to reality as any film can ever be.

The US Army had over 5000 dead and missing in less than five hours. The great majority from the first wave as portrayed in this clip.
